Biography

Born in 1957 in Bukavu in what was then the Belgian Congo, Jean van de Velde spent his early years in East Africa before moving to the Netherlands. He studied directing and screenwriting at the Dutch Film Academy in Amsterdam. He founded his own production company in 1985 and has written and directed numerous feature films and television productions. He has also served on the boards of the Netherlands Film Fund and Netherlands Film Festival, was Intendant of the Netherlands Film Fund from 2000 to 2003, and chairman of the Dutch Screenwriters Guild from 2011 to 2017. In 2004 the Netherlands Film Festival honoured him as Guest of the Year. Jean van de Velde lives with his wife in Utrecht, The Netherlands.
